Im looking to start a towing business and purchase my 1st rollback. I want a four door for space for the occasional bunch of friends and personal road trips. I dont want power stroke, I have 3 trucks around house with cummins 5.9 why not add a 4th? I want manual tranny for simplicity, durability, and cheaper rebuild when the time comes. at this present time i have a class-c license with no intentions to get b or a within next 12 months. I want to buy a used truck to get started. I plan to do towing and recovery short and long distance of autos, light equipment, anything i can legally tow that keeps the bills paid. Which truck would you suggest?

I wouldn't insist on sticking with the 5.9--Check out the F650 w/Cummins 6.7 --comes with Allison automatic or Eaton or Spicer if you must go manual.  We like a 21 ft steel deck w/removable rails and no air brakes, so no CDL required.

It's sexy and sturdy, built tough enough to handle EVERYTHING we've ever tried to tow or recover, and nearly zero problems, except for issues with operating at 40 below zero--which shouldn't be a problem where you're at.  Reasonable fuel economy, good handling, tight turning radius for a truck that size.  The only weak link we've found (we have 3, one with a Cat) is the 650s go through brakes & rotors.

The Allisons have relegated the manual transmission to the dustheap. I also say an F650 or maybe even a Hino with a Toyota Diesel/Allison combo

I agree with everyone above as far as getting a F650 or even a Hino, i've had 2 F650's and have 1 left and like magzs said my only complaint is that the brakes do wear out fast, but i've heard an exhaust brake will make a big difference. i also like the GMC with the duramax diesel.

As for the bed, if your going to do just regular towing...no scrap or equipment hualing maybe look at a 21ft aluminum bed, scrap and equipment hualing look at a steel bed.

Manual or automatic.....go with the auto there is no price difference in repairs anymore and in alot of cases the auto is cheaper to fix with alot less down time waiting for parts.

The exhaust brake is a big help!!! I have 2 2007 f650's 1 both have around 130k on them and still on the original brakes (hydraulic) and the pads still look thick.

The trucks that come with the 5.9 have serious frame issues. Only the newer dodges can stand uop to being a tow truck. I have seen at least 4 break right behind the cab. Plus older model dodges with a 5.9 are limited in their size. they are considered a very weak 1 ton frame.

Now, the 5.9 engine (especially the older pre 99 12 valve motor) are indestructible and have very giood power....

Theres nothing wrong with a cummins weather its in a dodge or the ford F650...the problem is everthing around the cummins falls apart. cats are good but can be expensive to repair. Stay away from the newer power strokes 6.0 & 6.4.

What body on the back end...all depends on your preference, every manufacturer has their own little problems. Myself i have 3 flatbeds all Chevron, 2 steel and 1 aluminum and all 3 have autogrip wheel lifts.
