COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - Deputies say a Richland County man's tow truck was stolen last Friday night, and this isn't the first wrecker to go missing.
Dave Kreiling has a warning. "I just want make the wrecker owners, law enforcement, and general public aware that wreckers are being stolen in Richland County at an alarming rate," he wrote.
A broken chain is a daily reminder to Kreiling that his $70,000 tow truck is gone.
"They came over the fence and broke the passenger window out and tried to drive it through the gates," he said. "Then they cut the chain with a torch and somehow defeated the ignition system and drove away."
The wrecker, a 2007 Ford F650 Rollback, is white and has a Godfrey's logo painted on both doors in red.
But the wrecker at Godfrey's isn't the only one that's been stolen lately. About 4.5 miles down the road, another wrecker was stolen. But this time, it was caught on tape.
"There's cameras indicating that the truck was stolen on the 26th of December," said William Nathan.
Surveillance video shows a man in a hooded sweatshirt pull out a blow torch and solder the gate open at J&W Auto Services. The truck stolen this time was a 2007 F750 flatbed.
"It's somebody that knew exactly what they were coming for," said Nathan.
Dave and William say the thefts hurt future business.
"We can't pick up vehicles we need to repair, we can't answer the rotation calls when the Highway Patrol calls, I mean it's just left us dead in the water," said Nathan.
Although Dave does have insurance, William's insurance won't pay until the case is resolved.
"I'm losing $20,000 in this deal no matter what I do, and it's $20,000 that I don't have," he said. "That means a truck payment, that means insurance, that's means the companies we are contracted with that we can't provide the service for."
Now both William and Dave have an offer.
"I hand you $1,000 cash for anybody that can give us any information in regards to these trucks," the men said. "No questions asked, just let us know where our trucks are."
Richland County investigators don't know if these cases are related, but they did say they were very similar.
If you have any information about either crime, call Crimestoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
