Alliance gets towing contract

SPRINGFIELD - An alliance of five area towing companies takes over the city's towing contract, beginning Tuesday, in an arrangement expected to generate about $500,000 in annual revenue - more than triple what the city has been getting.

Mayor Charles V. Ryan, who signed the contract this week with C F. Inc., doing business as Springfield Towing Alliance, said he is confident the contractor "is going to do a bang-up job."

The alliance will take over the police-ordered towing and storage contract from CJ's Towing Unlimited of Pasco Road, Springfield, which has held the contract since September 2000.

"We're ready to go," said Robert L. Jones of East Longmeadow, president of the alliance.

"We have a big job to do. We understand that we are ambassadors of good will. Every resident or visitor in our city will have the best experience possible with Alliance Towing."

The city's annual revenue never exceeded $160,000 under the prior contract.

The Police Department, on average, orders the towing of 10,000 vehicles annually in Springfield. Mild winters and other factors can reduce the number, officials said.

Springfield Towing Alliance consists of Red's Towing Inc., and Patriot Towing & Recovery Inc., both of West Springfield; Mascaro's Service Station of Springfield; and R&S Associates Inc., and Luzi Auto Body, both of Wilbraham.

After the contract was signed on Wednesday, City Councilor James J. Ferrera III said he is disappointed that it went to a group made up mostly of out-of-town companies. He also said he is concerned that the switch could create a difficult transition and service problems.

Ferrera made note of problems encountered by the Pioneer Valley Transit Authority when it switched companies for van service
